New England Patriots added some badly-needed depth on the tight end position on Monday. According to ESPN’s Mike Reiss, Pats claimed TE Jordan Thomas off waivers.

Thomas was waived by Arizona Cardinals over the weekend after he only managed one reception in four games this season.

New England struggled to find production from their tight ends in 2020, as their TE core grabbed only 10 catches throughout the first eight weeks. They also had a hard time staying on the field as Dalton Keene is week-to-week with a knee injury while 2020’s third-round selection Devin Asiasi landed on Injured Reserve recently.

The Pats only reliable option on TE so far was third-year player Ryan Izzo, who started all nine games in 2020. Izzo has nine receptions for 114 yards this season.

With all these issues in mind, the pickup of Jordan Thomas could prove to be beneficial for New England. Thomas showed potential during his rookie season with Houston Texans when he got 20 receptions for 215 yards and four TDs. He was a non-factor since then, but maybe all he needs is another opportunity.
