Patriots Release QB Turned WR Danny Etling

New England Patriots’ experiment of turning quarterback Danny Etling into a wide receiver was short-lived. Pats announced on Tuesday that they have released Etling, making him a free agent.

Considering the fact that he didn’t receive much playing time as a QB, Patriots announced last week that they are switching Etling to a WR. This move was aimed to give the team more depth at the position while allowing the player to have more snaps.

Etling made his debut as a receiver in New England’s preseason opener, but things didn’t turn out as well as both sides hoped. The 25-year-old was targeted only two times during the game and failed to make a single catch.

Patriots drafted Danny Etling in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Although he had a strong showing in the preseason, which included an impressive 86-yard touchdown run, Etling didn’t get to play a single snap in the regular season.

With New England entering 2019 with a stacked QB core, which includes Tom Brady, Brian Hoyer, and Jarrett Stidham, Etling didn’t have much chance of sticking around, so the position switch was his last hope to make the roster. Since that didn’t work, he will now have to try his luck somewhere else, but only after figuring out whether he is a quarterback or wide receiver.
