New England Patriots reportedly decided to move on from veteran wide receiver Mohamed Sanu. According to ESPN’s sources, the Pats informed Sanu on Wednesday that his time with the franchise has come to an end.

Sanu joined New England last year in a trade that saw the Pats’ send a second-round pick to Atlanta Falcons in exchange for his services. However, the 31-year-old player failed to make a mark at Gillette Stadium and finished the year with just 26 receptions for 207 yards and one touchdown.

Besides the fact that Sanu failed to deliver while with the organization, his release was also motivated by finances. With the move, the Pats managed to clear $6.5 million in cap space.

With Sanu gone, Pats now have 2018’s Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman and last year’s first-round pick N’Keal Harry as starters on the wideout position. The rest of the depth chart is a bigger unknown, although offseason acquisition Damiere Byrd is expected to have an expanded role in 2020.

Mohamed Sanu, on the other hand, shouldn’t wait for too long to land a new job. Despite not making it in New England, Sanu is still considered a dependable wideout who can provide depth and reliability on the offense.

Several WR-needy teams are in play for Sanu’s services, with Green Bay Packers being the most obvious spot for him.
