In a move that surprised no one, New England Patriots traded veteran defensive end Michael Bennett. Pats sent Bennett to Dallas Cowboys, receiving a conditional seventh-round pick in exchange. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the pick could become a sixth-rounder depending on conditions.

Bennett fell out of favor in New England after his altercation with defensive line coach Bret Bielema last week. He ended up being suspended by the team, and shortly after, it was reported that Pats were looking to move him.

Bennett joined Patriots from Philadelphia Eagles in March. Although he played 33 defensive snaps in the season opener, he saw his playing time continuously drop as the season progressed. The 33-year-old leaves New England, having played six games (one start)and contributing with five tackles and 2.5 sacks.

As ESPN points out, the New England Patriots’ benefit from trading Michael Bennett wasn’t much in draft compensation as in clearing $2.5 million in salary. Pats were dangerously close to the cap and by trading Bennett, gained some maneuvering space to address some other need.

Bennett is expected to see more action in Dallas than in New England, as Cowboys have been struggling with injury issues on their defensive line. Tyrone Crawford landed on injured reserve with hip issues, while Dorance Armstrong and Robert Quinn are also having minor health issues.
