After acquiring big man Steven Adams in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder, it appears that the Pelicans have locked up the big man for the next three seasons after agreeing to a two-year, $35 million extension with him.

Adams, whose previous contract was set to expire after this season, will join a franchise with a core of young players which they hope will propel them to playoff contention sooner rather than later.

New Orleans was looking for a steady veteran presence like Adams to improve its roster and serve as a mentor for young players like Zion Williamson and Brandon Ingram.

The New Zealand native had spent the entirety of his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder up until this offseason’s trade, and he averaged 9.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game with the team over the past seven seasons.

Adams started 63 games for the team last year, averaging 10.9 points and 9.3 rebounds per game.

Adams’ physicality and tenaciousness in the paint will be a boon for the Pelicans, who had been looking to bring in players to balance a small forward and guard-heavy roster.

Expect Adams’ deal to be officially announced in the next few days.
