The Pittsburgh Penguins will be without their captain Sidney Crosby as they enter the new NHL 2021-22 season. This comes after the team announced that Crosby has been ruled out of action for six weeks as a precaution after undergoing wrist surgery.

Penguins GM Ron Hextall explained that Crosby has been dealing with this persistent injury for years and that the team exhausted all minimally invasive options before resorting to surgery. “We all, including Sid, wish we had known this a month or two months ago,” Hextall said. “That would be great, but we are where we are.”

With training camp set to commence near the end of September, the Penguins will launch their 2021-22 season on October 12, when they face the defending Stanley Cup champions Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena in downtown Tampa, Florida.

Last season, Crosby was able to lead his team in all but one game, racking up 24 goals and 38 assists in what was a heavily disrupted campaign due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. He also managed to score a goal and record an assist during his team’s opening-round playoff loss against the New York Islanders.
