The Philadelphia Phillies announced that Sam Fuld will be their new general manager, working under team president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski.

The Phillies are in the midst of a complete overhaul, with Dombrowski joining the team earlier this month. Fuld was an outfielder in the MLB and played eight years in the league, retiring in 2015. Fuld joined the Phillies’ front office as a player information coordinator in 2017.

The former outfielder has been looking to become a general manager and has interviewed for openings with the Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox recently. He also declined an opportunity to interview with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Phillies reassigned former general manager Matt Klentak at the end of the 2020 season. They didn’t do much searching for a general manager until they hired Dombrowski, who quickly made a decision on giving Fuld the job.

Fuld has a lot of experience with analytics which many believe is his strong suit. Experts believe that the relationship between Fuld and Dombrowski will be a very complimentary one.

Philadelphia has not seen the postseason and has not finished a season over .500 since 2011. They went 28-32 during the shortened 2019-2020 season.
