The Philadelphia Phillies announced on Monday that first baseman Rhys Hoskins had undergone left elbow UCL repair surgery on Friday, fixing a nagging problem that occurred on September 12th during a game against the Miami Marlins.

Hoskins was injured when Marlins outfielder Corey Dickerson collided into his left, non-throwing arm at first place as Hoskins stretched to reach a throw from catcher JT Realmuto. Despite immediately grabbing his arm in pain, he stayed in the game and played the final two innings.

However, just two days later, Hoskins was placed on the injured list with an elbow injury which was later determined to be a partial tear of his left ulnar collateral ligament, missing the remainder of the season.

The surgery to fix his elbow, which was performed by Dr. Steve Cohen on Friday, is expected to have a recovery time of around 4-6 months. This window is shorter than it would have been if Hoskins suffered the injury to his throwing elbow.

Hoskins batted .245 with a .385 OBP and 10 home runs this season before being sidelined to injury, establishing his presence as one of the team’s top offensive threats.

If his rehabilitation process goes well, Hoskins should be recovered in time to take the field for Opening Day 2021.
