Gabon star striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Arsenal finally have a contract agreement after several months of tough negotiations. The Premier League side announced on Tuesday that Aubameyang committed his future to the club by inking a new three-year contract.
Aubameyang, who serves as the club’s captain since 2019, was entering the final year of his deal with Arsenal and would be able to leave the club for free next summer. At one point, this seemed like the most likely scenario, but the two sides reignited the contract talks in recent weeks and managed to hammer a deal that will keep the 31-year-old player at Emirates Stadium for years to come.
“He’s an important leader for the team and a big part of what we’re building,” said Arsenal’s head coach Mikel Arteta. “He wants to be up there with the best players in the world and leave his mark. He can achieve that here.”
According to reports, Aubameyang’s new deal makes him the club’s highest-paid player with a $320,000 weekly salary.
“I signed da ting because I want to become an Arsenal legend and to maybe leave a legacy,” said Aubameyang in a live stream in which he confirmed the news. “It’s time to work a lot to become a legend, I know, but I will give my best as always.”
Aubameyang joined Arsenal in 2017 and has been arguably the club’s best player since then. He was especially lethal in front of the goal, having scored 72 goals in 111 matches. This includes two goals in the two first games of the 2020/21 season.
