Los Angeles Chargers will most likely have to go through the 2020 NFL season without their standout safety Derwin James. According to reports, James suffered a meniscus injury and will require knee surgery that will rule him out between six and eight months.

James got injured during Sunday’s practice and had to be carted off the field. The Chargers initially said that the 24-year-old safety is being evaluated, and “a timeframe for his return has not yet been determined.” However, everything points out that he’s in for a long break.

This is a tough blow for both Derwin James and the Chargers. James dealt with injuries last season and was limited to only five games in 2019. He looked great in training camp this year, and it seemed like he is in for another stellar season after Pro Bowl and All-Pro selections in 2018. That, unfortunately, won’t be the case, and he’ll have to wait another year to get back on the field.

Chargers planned to rely heavily on James this year and don’t have particularly reliable backing within their roster. There is a chance that All-Pro corner Desmond King steps into the safety role, while second-year player Nasir Adderly and rookie Alohi Gilman could also be used to fill the void.
