Paris Saint-Germain’s dream of winning the UEFA Champions League won’t come true this season. The Ligue 1 champions have been eliminated from the competition after suffering a 2-0 loss to Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Round of 16 matchup. Bayern claimed a 1-0 win in the first leg as well.

Despite needing a win to reach the quarterfinals, PSG wasn’t aggressive from the get-go as many expected. As a matter of fact, they had three goals on goal in the first half compared to the six that Bayern had.

The second half saw the French club finally starting to put the pressure on Bayern but couldn’t find an opening. The Bundesliga powerhouse, on the other hand, used the space that was left behind and bagged two goals. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting scored in the 61st minute, and Serge Gnabry added another one late in regulation.

Bayern’s head coach Julian Nagelsmann said after the game that he didn’t like his team’s first-half performance but believed his team was better and deserved to win.

“In the first half, we didn’t do what we had talked about before very well,” said Nagelsmann. “There was too much space. But we defended better in the second half and were dangerous on the ball. In the end, we deserved to win.

The elimination marks the fifth time in the last seven seasons that PSG failed to advance past the Round of 16 in UCL. For comparison, Bayern only ended the competition in the same phase once during that time span.
