The Tampa Bay Rays lost third baseman Yandy Diaz to a foot injury last night after he fouled a ball off of himself in the bottom of the ninth inning of Monday night’s 9-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox.

The third baseman hobbled around the batter’s box and tried to give it a go to stay in the game, but the pain was too much and he was forced off of the field.

Diaz, who has hit .270 with 14 home runs in 78 games this season, has spent the majority of the season as a regular presence in Tampa’s lineup. He has been a key part of an offense that has helped the Rays to a surprising 57-46 record, which has the team in the heat of the AL Wild Card chase.

The Rays, who acquired Diaz from the Cleveland Indians last offseason, have been pleasantly surprised by the Cuba native’s production in their lineup when he’s been healthy.

He has already missed time on the IL twice this season, however, due to a left-hand injury and a hamstring strain.

Now, the Rays will wait with bated breath, hoping that X-rays and further testing on Diaz’s injured foot don’t reveal any broken bones.
