After a 12-day injured list spell which saw him return and pitch on Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Yonny Chirinos is heading back to the IL after informing his team of right elbow discomfort after a throwing session on Wednesday.

Chirinos, who has made three starts and posted a 2.38 ERA for the Rays this season, will be out until further notice in order to let his elbow attempt to heal.

Rays manager Kevin Cash spoke to the media before the Rays’ Wednesday game against the New York Yankees, stating, “He complained of just a lack of power in his pitches. We’ll have him checked out for sure. Want to get him right. We totally respect and understand the unique buildup that a lot of these guys have had, and he’s right at the top of that list. Hopefully some time off will help that.”

Chirinos has impressed during his first three seasons as a Ray, splitting time between the bullpen and the starting rotation and putting together a 3.65 ERA in 234.1 innings of work since his big league debut in 2018.

The Rays recalled RHP Aaron Slegers to replace Chirinos in the meantime.
