The Tampa Bay Rays are planning to call up one of the most interesting prospects in baseball to make his debut with the team on Saturday against the Texas Rangers.

McKay is a highly unique prospect as a two-way player, means that he both hits and pitches. He will be called up initially to start the Rays’ Saturday game on the mound but is expected to also see time as the team’s designated hitter.

The 23-year-old lefty was selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2017 MLB Amateur Draft. He was a decorated college player at the University of Louisville, winning both the Golden Spikes Award and the Dick Howser Trophy as the nation’s top collegiate player in 2017.

Rated a top-ten prospect unanimously, McKay justified his prospect status with a monster start to the 2019 season in the Minor Leagues. He started the year with AA Montgomery, posting a 1.30 ERA in 7 starts before being called up to AAA.

There, McKay was even better, recording a 1.08 ERA with 26 strikeouts in 4 starts. He also batted .265 and hit 4 home runs.

Now, McKay will have an opportunity to become one of baseball’s newest superstars as he gets the call to the big leagues just in time for this weekend.
