The Houston Texans have decided to cut their losses and release veteran running back Duke Johnson. The move was reported by ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter on Friday.

Johnson had one year left on the three-year, $15.61 million contract extension he signed in 2018 but no guaranteed money. By releasing him, the Texans saved $5 million in cap space.

The Texans made a big investment in Johnson two years ago, sending a third-round pick to the Cleveland Browns to get him. But the trade didn’t exactly go as expected.

Johnson had a promising first year in Houston, totaling 820 yards and five touchdowns from scrimmage despite starting only two games. His production in 2020 dropped significantly, however, as he combined for just 484 yards and two TDs while having an abysmal 3.1 yards per carry.

There is an argument to be made that Johnson didn’t receive enough touches as a Texan, playing a backup role for the better part of his time with the team. But he also didn’t excel when given an opportunity, making this a good decision for Houston considering the cap savings.

Johnson should have a market in the offseason, considering that his ability to serve as both a running and receiving weapon is highly appreciated in today’s NFL. Maybe he can even resurrect his career if he lands in the right situation.
