Despite the transfer window being closed in Europe, Premier League side Chelsea remains active in looking for ways to strengthen their squad. As part of those efforts, the London club organized a medical for RB Leipzig star attacker Christopher Nkunku.
Chelsea is eyeing a move for Nkunku next summer and wants to get an edge over the player’s other suitors, including the likes of Bayern Munich and Real Madrid. According to German media outlet Bild, the 24-year-old had his medical in Frankfurt with members of Chelsea’s medical staff in presence.
This situation sparked rumors that Nkunku had already agreed to sign with Chelsea, but the sources close to the player claim this isn’t true. The Frenchman is under contract with Leipzig until 2026 but reportedly has a $60 million clause that will come into effect next summer.
Christopher Nkunku attracted the attention of top European clubs with a breakthrough performance last season. He ended the 2021-22 campaign with 35 goals and 20 assists in all competitions. Nkunku is in fine form this season as well, having six goals and one assist in 11 matches.
Chelsea and other teams tried to sign Nkunku this past summer, but Leipzig managed to convince the player to remain in Germany for at least another season. He inked a new and improved deal while receiving the previously mentioned clause as a sign of good faith.
