Real Madrid took care of business in a Wednesday night matchup against RCD Mallorca to retake first place in La Liga in a comfortable 2-0 win.

Los Blancos, which found itself needing a win to head into the weekend in first place after Barcelona’s Tuesday triumph over Athletic Club, met up with a Mallorca side which is currently looking to claw its way out of the relegation zone in the table.

Mallorca, currently in 18th place, gave it their all on Wednesday night and turned in a decent performance, but ultimately couldn’t make any serious attempts at the goal.

Real Madrid, however, went up 1-0 in the 19th minute of the match after Brazilian youngster Vinicius beat keeper Manolo Reina with a smooth chip to give his team the lead. The play wasn’t without controversy, however, as Mallorca’s players admonished the referee for ignoring what could have been a foul by Dani Carvajal in the lead-up to the goal.

The goal was given, however, and Madrid then doubled its lead just eleven minutes into the second half. Defender Sergio Ramos found the top left corner of the net on a brilliant free kick to double his team’s lead and assure its victory.

Mallorca, on the other hand, lost and now finds itself 4 points from safety behind 17th place Eibar.

Real Madrid will look to keep up its winning ways on Sunday in a visit to Espanyol, while Barcelona will keep looking to put pressure on the leaders with a win on Saturday at Celta Vigo.
