Real Madrid won a 0-1 game against cellar-dwelling Espanyol on Sunday night, propelling them to a two-point advantage in the La Liga race after Celta Vigo managed a draw with second-place Barcelona on Sunday.

Real Madrid didn’t turn in its most convincing performance, managing only 2 shots on target against the worst team in the league record-wise. However, they made one of those two shots count just before the half as a brilliant backheel assist from Karim Benzema to Casemiro beat Espanyol keeper Diego Lopez and gave Los Blancos a 0-1 lead.

“It was a nice assist but the goal was more important, Casemiro did well and got us three important points after a very difficult game,” Benzema remarked at the conclusion of the game.

They wouldn’t relinquish their minimal advantage on the scoreboard despite a decent effort from an Espanyol side that looked hungry to beat the odds and take a point from their matchup with La Liga’s top club.

However, at the end of 90 minutes, they were unable to manage to beat Thibault Courtois and the Madrid defense and found themselves walking away from the RCDE Stadium with yet another loss in a season full of disappointment.

Real Madrid will look to continue its winning ways against Getafe on Thursday night in yet another crucial game.
