7th placed La Liga side Real Sociedad suffered a crucial blow to their hopes for Champions League qualification on Monday night following a disappointing 1-1 draw with Levante.

The Basque side, having lost four of their previous five matches leading up to the clash, has endured a torrid time on the pitch since the resumption of the La Liga season following its suspension due to the coronavirus pandemic. In March (prior to the league’s suspension), the Northern Spanish club was sitting in fourth place with Champions League qualification well within reach.

Monday night’s match got off to an eventful start, with home side Levante earning a 12th minute lead courtesy of an Alexander Isak strike. Just four minutes later, the favorites struck back with a rapid counter-attack, leveling the score with a well-placed shot from José Luis Morales.

For the remainder of the game, both sides remained evenly matched. While Real Sociedad took eight shots on goal, the underdogs managed to get nine attempts, while holding onto 46% ball possession. Ultimately, Levante proved to be too resilient for a weathered Real Sociedad squad, with the game ending in a draw. Levante currently finds itself in 12th place with 43 points.
