The nightmare season that has been 2020 seems to be coming to a merciful end for Red Sox left fielder Andrew Benintendi.

Boston is going to be transferring him to the 45-day injured list, according to Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke, which means that he’s going to be out for the rest of the season.

Benintendi has not been healthy at all this season and it’s been obvious in his performance. He suffered a rib cage strain last month while running the bases and was placed on the IL. If he’s truly done for this reason, Benintendi will have only played in 14 of the total 60 Red Sox games this season.

There’s really no reason to rush Benintendi back into a lost 2020 season since there are only 18 games left. The Red Sox currently have a record of 14-28.

Benintendi had a very rough time hitting this year, even though he has been one of the more promising young bats on the team over the last several seasons. In 2020, the 26-year-old player was 4-for-39 for a .103 batting average and .314 on-base percentage.

Roenicke said that he hopes that Benintendi will be able to forget about his terrible 2020, with a little bit of more time away from the game to recover, and bounce back strong in 2021.
