The Detroit Red Wings made a big splash on Monday by acquiring All-Star winger Alex DeBrincat in a deal with the Ottawa Senators.

To get DeBrincat to Detroit, the Red Wings gave up forward Dominik Kubalik, defenseman Donovan Sebrango, a conditional first-rounder in 2024, and a 2024 fourth-round selection.

DeBrincat also received a new deal from the Red Wings. The 25-year-old player inked a four-year contract extension that comes with an average annual salary of $7.875 million.

The move represents a homecoming of sorts for DeBrincat. He was born and raised in Farmington Hills, Michigan, a town nearby Detroit, and was a big Red Wings fan while growing up.

“It’s super exciting,” DeBrincat said in a chat with reporters after the move was made official. “Obviously growing up here and rooting for the Red Wings when I was younger, it’s definitely a dream come true. I don’t think anyone is happier than my parents. Everyone is happy. It’s a good spot for me.”

Alex DeBrincat gives the Red Wings a quality player that can help them return to contention alongside the likes of Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider, and Lucas Raymond. Detroit is waiting to return to the postseason since 2015–16.

DeBrincat was an All-Star back in 2021-22 when he had 41 goals and 37 assists with the Chicago Blackhawks. He was less efficient last season, managing 66 points across 82 games.
