David Ferrer bid the game a tearful farewell with his 15th and final appearance in the tournament, playing his final match in Barcelona. The tennis player is set to retire after the upcoming Madrid Open next month.  Ferrer’s final match against Nadal was a win for Nadal with 6-3, 6-3, taking him a step closer to a record 12th Barcelona title.

Although Nadal showed no mercy towards Ferrer’s understandably emotional state, he saluted his compatriot, saying that everyone was grateful to Ferrer, as a high-leveled player and a pleasure to watch. Nadal added that 37-year-old Ferrer did not retire because of his level, but rather because of injuries that had complicated his life for the past year and a half.

In 2013, Ferrer ranked as the number three tennis player in the world. In that same year, he came very close to winning a Grand Slam as well, although Nadal stole that victory in the French Open final. Ferrer has stated that he was very happy with his last match on the court, that he gave it all he had, and it was everything he had wanted it to be.
