The San Francisco 49ers might have to look for a new cornerback next season. Speaking with NBC Sports Bay Area over the weekend, 49ers All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman hinted that he won’t return to the team in 2021.

While Sherman would like to continue his career as a 49er, he said that he believes the franchise will not be able to keep him due to financial reasons.

“I’ve enjoyed my time,” said Sherman. “I’ve loved every moment of it. And I wish we could continue it for a couple more years, but it’s not looking likely.”

“I think we still have work to do. But I don’t know that the circumstances will allow it,” he added.

Richard Sherman joined the 49ers in 2018 as a free agent, signing a three-year, $39 million deal with the organization. Since then, he became the team’s leading defensive back and returned to Pro Bowl form last season, earning his first nod since 2016.

The injuries prevented him from making the same impact in 2020, as he spent the better part of the season sidelined with a calf muscle injury. He managed to play only two games, contributing with 11 tackles, one interception, and one pass deflection.

Sherman previously spent seven years with the Seattle Seahawks, helping the franchise to a Super Bowl victory and establishing himself as one of the best corners in the game.
