Robert Lewandowski is considered to be one of the best strikers in the world in the recent decade, having made a name for himself with prolific performances in Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich’s jerseys. However, it turns out that Lewandowski almost didn’t come to Germany.

Lewandowski first caught the attention of Europe thanks to his performances in native Poland with Lech Poznan. And it appears that Seria A side Genoa was the first in line to secure his services.

According to former Genoa sporting director Stefano Capozucca, the club had a deal in place with Poznan with Lewandowski only needing to pass his medical. However, Geona’s president Enrico Preziosi stepped in and vetoed the deal.

“The deal was done for Lewandowski in 2010,” said Capozucca in a recent chat with Radio Sportiva. “[Gian Piero] Gasperini knew him well. He still had to undergo a medical, but then the President pulled the plug.”

It’s safe to say that Preziosi regretted his decision.

Following his failed move to Seria A, Robert Lewandowski joined Borussia and went on to play four years with the team, scoring 103 goals in 187 appearances. Lewandowski then made a move to Bayern, where he continued his goal scoring journey by netting 230 goals in only 275 games.

Lewandowski was particularly impressive in the current season, scoring 39 times in 33 appearances before the season was suspended.
