The struggling Colorado Rockies have finally received some good news. Their right-hand ace Germán Márquez is ready to return to action after being sidelined since March 2023 due to a Tommy John surgery.
According to the Rockies, Márquez will make his 2024 debut on Citi Field, receiving the nod to start for the third game of the ongoing series against the New York Mets.
Márquez will likely be on a pitch count in his return to the majors and is expected to throw between 75 to 90 pitches, according to Colorado’s manager Bud Black.
“It’s going to be good to have him back. He’s super excited to be back. The guys are pumped to have him here and ready for Sunday,” Black told reporters. “So, we’re anxiously awaiting his return to our rotation. He feels good. Came out of his rehab starts very good — after the game, next day, bounce back, so he feels good.”
Germán Márquez played four games in 2023, going 2-2 with a 4.95 ERA and 17 strikeouts before undergoing surgery. Overall, he has a 65-56 record with a 4.41 ERA and 983 strikeouts in eight seasons with the Rockies.
The Rockies will hope that Márquez’s return can help them turn around their season. They are currently at the bottom of the NL West with a 33-62 record, third-worst in the MLB after the Miami Marlins and Chicago White Sox.
