Colorado Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland is going back to basics. The team announced on Friday that they are sending Freeland to minors, optioning him to their Triple-A affiliate Albuquerque Isotopes.

The Rockies are hoping that the move will have a positive impact on Freelander, who, recently, hasn’t been playing anywhere near the level he showcased in 2018 when he finished fourth in Cy Young voting.

The 26-year-old left-hander is 2-6 with 7.13 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 2019, having given up National League-high 16 home runs and 47 earned runs. For comparison, he had a 17-7 record with 2.85 ERA and 173 strikeouts in the previous MLB season.

“I’m able to clearly see why” – said Freeland of the move. “Obviously right now I am hurting the ballclub every time out. I’m not giving them a great chance. So I’ve decided to go down and get everything right, get back on track, and get back to being me.”

Colorado Rockies made a series of other roster moves, reinstating reliever Chris Rusin who was on a 10-day injured list with a strained back. The team also called up reliever Jesus Tinoco from Isotopes and sent outfielder Yonathan Daza to minors.

Rockies are currently third in NL West with 28-27 record.
