Jon Gray of the Colorado Rockies saw his breakout 2019 season come to a premature end on Wednesday after being diagnosed with a stress fracture in his left foot that will sideline him for the rest of the year.

Gray’s bright season had been one of the few bright spots in a frustrating 2019 for the Rockies, which has seen the team slip to a last-place 58-69 record in the NL West. The team had qualified for the playoffs in each of the past two seasons.

This is the second time that Gray has suffered the same injury in his left foot. The big righty stated to the media that he is considering the possibility of a surgery to fix the problem so that it won’t come back to affect him in the future.

The 3rd overall pick in the 2013 MLB Draft had struggled with consistency before making adjustments that led him to be the anchor of the embattled Rockies’ staff in 2018. Gray put up a 3.84 ERA in 25 starts this season, striking out a batter per inning and keeping his composure while pitching at the notoriously tricky Coors Field.

Gray is expected to be back at full strength for the beginning of the 2020 season, whether or not he undergoes surgery to fix the problem.
