After losing Landon Collins to a season-ending injury last week, Washington Football Team was expected to pursue free-agent safety Eric Reid. They ended up doing so but were surprisingly rejected by the veteran.

Speaking with ESPN on Tuesday, Reid confirmed that he rejected an offer from Washington. According to the 28-year-old player, the organization wanted him to join their practice squad first, which didn’t sit well with the one-time Pro Bowler.

“I just don’t think playing on the practice squad is reflective or indicative of my career,” said Reid.

Reid added that he would be interested in joining Washington if they are willing to offer him a starting spot right away.

“If they go a different direction, I’ll be ready,” he explained.

Washington always seemed like a natural landing spot for Eric Reid, considering his familiarity with head coach Ron Rivera. The pair worked together with Carolina Panthers, where Reid made 29 starts in 2018 and 2019, contributing with impressive 130 tackles, 5.0 sacks, one interception, and 11 passes defended.

The reason why Washington isn’t ready to offer Reid a spot on the team right away is rookie Kamren Curl, who will get a chance to start in the next few weeks. Curl was selected in the seventh round of the 2020 NFL Draft after totaling 76 tackles, two interceptions, and 2.0 sacks in his junior year with Arkansas.
