It could be argued that New Orleans Saints are taking the quarterback position more seriously than any other team. Despite already having a legendary quarterback Drew Brees on their roster, and signing Taysom Hill on a $21 million extension, Saints went on and brought in free-agent signal-caller Jameis Winston as well.

According to NFL Network, Sains and Winston agreed to a team-friendly, one-year deal. The 26-year-old previously spent five years as a starter with Tampa Bay Buccaneers before being replaced by Tom Brady in the offseason.

Winston will most likely serve as a backup for Brees in 2020, filling the void left by the departure of Teddy Bridgewater. While Hill was expected to get the spot this year, it is now more probable that he will reprise his role as New Orleans’ “Swiss Army knife” from previous years.

After leaving Tampa Bay, Jameis Winston was expected to pursue a starting spot but that proved to be a lot tougher task than expected. Winston failed to attract the offers he has hoped for, so he ended up taking a book from Bridgewater’s book. Bridgewater spent the previous two years as Brees’ backup, resurrecting his career and managing to get a three-year, $63 million deal from Carolina Panthers.

Winston is coming off a career year from a statistical standpoint, as he led the league with 5,109 passing yards and 33 touchdowns. However, he was also careless with the ball, throwing 30 interceptions and turning over the ball a total of 35 times. This brought him an infamous honor of becoming the first NFL QB to throw 30-or-more touchdowns and 30 interceptions in a single season.
