The New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr suffered an oblique injury in his team’s 26-13 preseason loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, a source quoted by ESPN confirmed. The source added that Carr underwent an MRI on Tuesday that confirmed the nature of his injury.

While additional testing is required, Carr suspected that his injury came while he threw an incomplete pass near the end of the defeat to the Chiefs. Although oblique injuries are known to rule players out for several weeks, no timeline has been given as to Carr’s recovery process.

Although Carr left the game early, he insisted that he didn’t depart prematurely as a result of pain derived from his injury. “It wasn’t like dealing with pain. … I just can’t do what I want to do,” Carr explained, referring to his concern that he wouldn’t be able to continue his strong performances while harboring an injury.

Carr’s injury comes at a troubling time for the Saints, with the team set to play two games in the space of 10 games. They first host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday before welcoming the Denver Broncos to the Mercedes-Benz Superdome next Friday.
