New Orleans Saints might get their injured star wideout Michael Thomas back on the field sooner than expected. According to multiple reports, Thomas returned to practice and is “moving well” after previously missing two games due to ankle injury.

Thomas got hurt in Week 1 win over Tampa Bay Buccaneers, being diagnosed with a high ankle sprain. The 27-year-old wideout was projected to miss at least three weeks recovering, but sources close to the organization say that he has been pushing for a return on the field sooner than that.

It’s believed that Thomas is now eyeing to play in Week 4 against Detroit Lions, although it is not clear whether the medical and coaching staff will let him back on the field so soon.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports that Thomas will first have to prove there is no risk from re-injuring the ankle before the organization starts considering his status for the Lions’ game.

While the Saints didn’t see their offense skip a beat in terms of yardage without Michael Thomas, the fact is that they lost both games in which he didn’t play. Still, with so much left in the season, it wouldn’t be surprising if New Orleans takes a cautious approach with three-time Pro Bowler in order to have him 100 percent when it matters the most.

Thomas was the best wide receiver in NFL last year, breaking the record with 149 receptions while leading the league with 1,725 receiving yards. He also added career-high nine touchdowns.
