The San Diego Padres have found their new manager after firing Andy Green at the end of the 2019 season.

The Padres hired Jayce Tingler, a 38-year-old without any previous Major League managerial experience, according to multiple media reports on Wednesday. The young manager who will now be in charge of the team comes over from the Texas Rangers, where he previously served as the Major League Player Development Field Coordinator.

Tingler, a Missouri native, does have experience in the Dominican Republic. He served as the manager for the Rangers’ Dominican League team in 2008 and 2009 and also is currently managing the Leones del Escogido during the 2019-20 Dominican Winter League season.

The new manager’s experience with Spanish-speaking players and his ability to speak the language is reportedly one of the reasons that he was chosen for the job.

Another reason he was picked has to do with his close relationship with Padres general manager AJ Preller. Tingler was drafted by Preller during his time with the Rangers and previously worked under him during Preller’s tenure with the AL West organization.

Tingler will now be tasked with turning around a franchise that has failed to make the MLB Playoffs since the 2006 season.
