At the upcoming Italian Open, Serena Williams will be returning from her injury pause. The tournament director Serio Palmieri told the Associated Press that he had spoken to Serena Williams’ agent and the agent told him she had already reserved rooms and will arrive in Italy a few days before the May 13–19 tournament.

Serena made a brief pause from playing after she withdrew from the third – round match at the Miami Open in March because of an undisclosed knee injury. Since she defeated Madison Keys in 2016 final, she hasn’t played in Rome because of it.

On the other hand, Roger Federer’s status is still under question. He announced his schedule in which he plans to play in next week’s Madrid Open as his only warmup before the 26th May French Open. Roger who is 37 years old hasn’t played the clay season for two years. Palmieri said that unlike the last two years, Federer entered to play and did not withdraw ahead of time so it is possible for him to play. He also said that knowing Federer, it’s more likely that he will be coming only if he plays well.
