Veteran pitcher Sergio Romo ended his MLB career in the same way he started it; by pitching for his beloved San Francisco Giants. Romo made an appearance on the mound in the seventh inning of the Giants’ spring training game against the Oakland Athletics, before officially retiring from professional baseball.

Romo’s final inning wasn’t spectacular, as he committed two clock violations and surrendered two singles. But this didn’t matter in the end as he eventually got the proper sendoff from the game he enjoyed for 15 years.

“Very fitting to find some closure in what literally is for me, was a storybook career,” Romo told reporters after the game.

Sergio Romo spent the first nine years of his MLB career with the Giants, earning an All-Star nod in 2013 and helping the franchise to three World Series wins. He later became a journeyman, suiting up for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Miami Marlins, and the Minnesota Twins, among other franchises. The 40-year-old player split the 2022 campaign between the Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays, making a total of 23 appearances.

Romo had already made up his mind about retirement when the Giants called to ask whether he would like to pitch for them during spring training. He said yes, and ended up signing a short-term contract that allowed him to retire as a member of the franchise.
