Skip Schumaker has been hired as the new manager of the Miami Marlins, the team announced on Tuesday.

While this is Schumaker’s first managerial role, Marlins general manager Kim Ng has expressed confidence in the former player’s abilities, stating that Schumaker’s experience and dedication “will be a tremendous example to our players.”

During his playing career, Schumaker appeared in 11 MLB seasons, representing the St. Louis Cardinals for eight of those seasons. His career highlights include winning the World Series with the Cardinals in 2006 and 2011.

Since his retirement, Schumaker has spent four seasons as an assistant with the San Diego Padres before spending a season as the Cardinals’ bench coach.

“I’m very excited and grateful that [owner Bruce Sherman], Kim, and the Marlins organization have given me an opportunity to manage a very talented team,” Schumaker publicly stated following the announcement of his appointment. He added that he is committed to delivering a “winning culture” to the team.

Schumaker replaces Don Mattingly, whose contract was not renewed at the end of last season. Mattingly served as manager for the past seven seasons, leading the Marlins with the most all-time leader in wins.
