Another big name is set to miss the return of the National Women’s Soccer League. NWSL side Sky Blue FC confirmed on Sunday that their star midfielder Carli Lloyd suffered an injury and will miss the upcoming 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup.

According to the announcement, Lloyd injured her left knee during a home workout and is still in the rehabbing process.

“I was optimistic about being able to return in time for the NWSL Challenge Cup, but my injury is going to require more time to recover,” said Lloyd via the club’s official website. “I am disappointed I will not be able to compete with my teammates, but I will be cheering them on!”

Lloyd, who played almost 300 games with U.S. international team, joined Sky Blue in 2018 in a trade with Houston Dash. The 37-year-old made 14 appearances in NWSL in 2019, scoring eight goals and dishing one assist.

The 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup is set to take place between June 27th and July 26th as a way for NWSL to return to activities after suspension due to coronavirus pandemic. The 25-game tournament will take place in Salt Lake City with all nine teams.

Besides Carli Lloyd, the 2020 NWSL Challenge Cup will also lack appearances from several other big stars and members of United States women’s national team like Megan Rapinoe, Christen Press, and Alex Morgan.
