Manchester United defender Chris Smalling expressed his disappointment due to his loan spell at Italian club Roma coming to an end. The defender, who is now due to return to Old Trafford, is disappointed not to be included in the Serie A club’s lineup for their Europa League round of 16 clash against Spanish outfit Sevilla.

Smalling took to Twitter to share his emotions on the matter, explaining, “I’m gutted that I can’t finish what we started this season. To experience the love shown to me in such a short time was extra special and it will not be forgotten. I want to thank and wish all the players and staff the best of luck against Sevilla.”

The Red Devils’ center back impressed fans and footballers alike during his time in Italy, where he steadily became a fan favorite despite running into his fair share of challenges. In addition to a fine defensive effort, Smalling contributed three goals in his 30 league appearances.

Manchester United experienced a similar issue with winger Alexis Sanchez, who was loaned out to Inter Milan for the duration of the season, where he also impressed. Unlike Smalling, Sanchez was able to sign an extension on his loan deal in time to be included in his side’s lineup in their Europa League round of 16 clash against La Liga side Getafe.
