While U.S. international midfielder Weston McKennie is still a member of Schalke 04, it looks like this won’t be the case for much longer. According to German media outlet Bild, McKennie has been a subject of $26 million bid from Premier League side Southampton.

McKennie has been linked with a move from Veltins-Arena for some time now, with several Premier League clubs interested in his services. However, Southampton seems to be the most serious about their interest in the 21-year-old player and have made the first move.

The only thing that is stopping the transfer at the moment is the different evaluations by the two clubs. While Southampton is offering $26 million, Schalke is reportedly sticking to their $30 million price tag.

Southampton are making a strong push for McKennie as they view him as a suitable replacement for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. The Danish midfielder left the club earlier this month, joining Tottenham Hotspur.

Weston McKennie has had a stellar campaign for Schalke in 2019/20, making 32 appearances across all competitions and contributing with three goals and an assist. However, the Bundesliga side is willing to sell as they try to deal with the financial consequences of coronavirus pandemic and the fact that they missed on European competitions several seasons in a row.
