It was rumored for some time that San Antonio Spurs might explore trading DeMar DeRozan in coming months, considering that his contract expires at the end of the next season. Sources close to the organization, however, report that Spurs have other plans for the 30-year-old shooting guard.

According to San Antonio Express-News, Spurs are happy with the group of players they currently have at their disposal and consider DeRozan as a valuable member of the team. While they have not yet presented him with the max-contract offer he is eligible for, they are reportedly considering doing that at some point in the offseason.

DeRozan arrived at San Antonio last year as a part of the trade that sent Kawhi Leonard to Toronto Raptors. He put together a solid season, averaging 21.2 points per game while recording career highs in assists (6.0) and rebounds (6.1).

While it can’t be denied that DeMar DeRozan is a good basketball player, it’s up for discussion whether he deserves a max contract. DeRozan was productive through the major part of his time in the league, but has failed to adapt to modern NBA game.

One of the biggest issues is DeRozan’s inability to hit 3-pointers, and over time the things got so bad that he even stopped taking them. Considering that the 3-point shot became crucial in basketball in recent years, this might be something that significantly decreases his value as a player.
