After a fairly long search, the Houston Rockets have decided on their next head coach.

According to sources close to the organization, the new coach will be former Dallas Mavericks assistant Stephen Silas.

Silas has been an assistant coach in the league for the last 20 years and has worked for seven different organizations. He was most recently with the Mavericks, working beside head coach Rick Carlisle since 2018.

For those who find the last name familiar, it’s because Silas is the son of former NBA coach Paul Silas. Stephen worked with his father in Cleveland for the first two years of Lebron James’ career with the Cavaliers.

According to reports, the Rockets conducted very detailed interviews in order to find the right person to replace former coach Mike D’Antoni. Silas was one of three finalists for the job. The other two were broadcaster and former coach Jeff Van Gundy and John Lucas II, who was already in Houston working as an assistant coach.

Reports claim that the Rockets were most impressed by Silas’ ability to design creative offensive plays and his experience working with star scorers like Stephen Curry and Luka Doncic. In Houston, he has to premier scorers to work with, James Harden and Russell Westbrook, who are going to offer him a lot of opportunities to get creative on the offensive side of the ball.
