Uruguay striker Luis Suarez has confirmed that he will not apologize for the controversial handball incident that led to the elimination of Ghana from the quarterfinals of the 2010 World Cup. Suarez has become a center of controversy ahead of Ghana’s match against Uruguay in what is both teams’ final group match.

Suarez was sent off in the final minute of extra time of the 2010 quarterfinal game when he blocked Dominic Adiyiah’s goal-bound header using his hands. This led to Suarez getting a red card as well as a penalty being awarded to Ghana. Asamoah Gyan missed his spot-kick, thereby sending the game to a penalty shootout which Uruguay won 4-2.

“I don’t apologize about that, I did the handball, but the Ghana player missed the penalty, not me,” Suarez stated during a news conference. “I could apologize if I injured a player with a tackle and got a red card, but in this situation I take a red card and the referee says penalty.”

The two nations will meet in the final game of Group H on Friday, thereby setting up the first encounter between Ghana and Uruguay since the infamous 2010 quarterfinal.
