Quarterback Nick Foles announced his intention to retire as a member of the Philadelphia Eagles. Foles is best known for leading the Eagles to a 41-33 win over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LII and receiving Super Bowl LII MVP honors.

Foles will make his retirement official during the Eagles’ Week 2 home game against the Atlanta Falcons. He last played in the NFL in 2022 with the Indianapolis Colts and spent the 2023 season without a team.

“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to retire as a Philadelphia Eagle,” said Foles in a statement shared by the Eagles. “The City of Brotherly Love has always felt like home to me as an NFL player. Philadelphia is a city I truly love, and it has been an honor to wear the Eagles jersey. Thank you, Philadelphia, for embracing me and making me a part of your family forever. Your love and support have meant the world. Fly, Eagles, Fly!”

Foles started his pro career as the Eagles’ third-round selection in 2012 and spent three years in Philly before embarking on stints with the St. Louis Rams and Kansas City Chiefs.

Foles would eventually return to the Eagles ahead of the 2017 as a backup to sophomore signal-caller Carson Wentz. However, after Wentz suffered a season-ending injury in Week 14, Foles was trusted with a starting role and delivered the best stretch of his career.

With Foles under center, the Eagles won the NFC East and breezed through NFC playoffs to meet the heavily favored Patriots in Super Bowl LII. There, Foles played an instrumental role in bringing Philly its first Super Bowl ever, throwing for three touchdowns and catching one TD as part of the now-iconic play “Philly Special.”

Foles later parlayed his Super Bowl MVP campaign into a four-year, $88 million with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2019 but ended up spending just one injury-riddled year with the franchise. He later played two seasons with the Chicago Bears before the lone campaign with the Colts.
