The San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy’s surgery on his right elbow has been delayed due to inflammation, NFL Network reported. Prior to the swelling, Purdy was scheduled to undergo surgery on Wednesday.

Dr. Keith Meister, who is overseeing Purdy’s procedure, met with the quarterback on Tuesday, during which time he determined that the surgery should be delayed. Purdy and Meister are hoping that the operation can be performed sometime around the beginning of March.

If carried out at its intended date, the surgery’s six-month recovery timeframe would see Purdy return to the field by August at the earliest. This would only be the case, however, if Purdy does not require a hybrid surgery that involves the partial reconstruction of the elbow in addition to a regular repair.

We’re going into it thinking the repair with the InternalBrace, for sure,” Meister confirmed. “All the surgeons have said that and that’s what we’re hoping for and get a six-month recovery in and be ready for [training] camp.”

As Purdy remains unable to play this season, the Niners are expected to rely on Trey Lance to fill the role of first-choice quarterback. He too is recovering from injury, namely a broken right ankle.
