The post Hawks All-Star PG Trae Young Requires Hand Surgery, Will Miss at Least 4 Weeks appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Young hurt his hand during the 123-121 loss to the Toronto Raptors on Friday. An MRI test showed that Young suffered a “tear of the radial collateral ligament (RCL) in the fifth finger of his left hand.” He will have surgery this week and be re-evaluated after four weeks, meaning his absence could be even longer than that.
Young has been enjoying a strong campaign in 2023-24, averaging 26.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 10.8 assists per game. He received his third All-Star nod this season, being selected to the 2024 All-Star game by Commissioner Adam Silver as an injury replacement.
With Young out for such an extended period of time, the Hawks find themselves in big trouble. After a poor start to the season, the team looked like it was poised for a strong finish and a place in the Play-In tournament. But that now seems it could be a bigger challenge than expected.
The Hawks are currently sitting at No. 10 in the Eastern Conference with a 25-32 record. They are 3.5 games ahead of the Brooklyn Nets, the first team currently out of the Play-In picture.

]]>Young suffered a concussion during a 116-95 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Saturday. The 25-year-old player took charge by Cavs’ Isaac Okoro in the fourth quarter and was accidentally hit in the head. Young, who finished the night with 15 points and five assists, remained on the court for a couple more minutes before heading to the locker room.
According to the Hawks’ announcement, Young will now start the NBA-mandated Return-to-Participation process, and there is “no predetermined timetable to complete the process”.
Young has been enjoying a strong season, averaging 26.9 points and a career-high 10.8 assists in 39 games. He is shooting 42.2% from the field and 36.4% from behind the three-point line.
The Hawks have been one of the most disappointing teams in 2023-24 but showed some signs of life recently, winning three straight games before the loss to the Cavs. They are sitting at No. 10 in the Eastern Conference with an 18-24 record.

]]>The post Hawks Had a Trade Proposal for All-Star Pascal Siakam, Rejected By the Raptors appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>In a recent report published on The Athletic, NBA insider Shams Charania wrote that the Raptors are willing to listen to offers from Siakam as they lean towards a rebuild. However, there hasn’t been much traction in talks with other teams, and only the Hawks made an official offer.
According to Charania, the Hawks offered a package that included forwards De’Andre Hunter and AJ Griffin alongside draft compensation. The Raptors ended up passing on the proposal, and the teams are yet to engage in another round of talks.
The Hawks are reportedly still interested in Siakam and might return with another offer at a later date. But they don’t intend to overpay for the 29-year-old forward and would be comfortable entering the 2023-24 NBA season with the current roster.
Pascal Siakam currently has one year left on the four-year, $130 million extension he signed with the Raptors back in 2019. He is coming off his best season as a pro, having averaged a career-high 24.2 points and 5.8 assists alongside 7.8 rebounds per game in 2022-23. Siakam won the NBA Most Improved Player award in 2019 and has two All-Star selections on his resume.

]]>The post Hawks Sign All-Star Dejounte Murray to a 4-year, $120 Million Extension appeared first on yoursportspot.com.
]]>Murray completed his first season with the Hawks, joining the franchise in a trade with the San Antonio Spurs last summer. He averaged 20.5 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 6.1 assists across 74 games.
When the Hawks traded for Murray, the franchise expected him to be the missing piece that would make them a proper contender in the Eastern Conference. However, Murray didn’t turn out to be the best possible fit alongside ball-dominant fellow All-Star Trey Young while the rest of the team underperformed.
After the Hawks were bounced in the first round of the 2023 NBA Playoffs, many believed that the Hawks would try to move Murray. The 26-year-old was entering the final year of his rookie contract, and the sentiment was that they might hit a resent on the core surrounding Young.
But obviously, the Hawks have different plans and believe that new coach Quin Snyder can make the duo of Murray and Young work.
Dejounte Murray started his NBA career as the 29th overall pick by the Spurs in the 2016 NBA Draft. After struggling to get playing time in his rookie year, Murray started rapidly developing as a player. He made the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in his sophomore year and followed that up with an All-Star appearance in 2022.

]]>The deal will see Hawks receiving veteran forward Rudy Gay and a second-round pick. They will also get a $25.3 million trade exception, which they can use at any point in the next 12 months.
Collins finished the 2022-23 campaign averaging 13.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, which was the lowest since his rookie season. This and his large contract, which guarantees him $78 million over the course of the next three years, is probably the reason why the Hawks received a lot less for the 25-year-old than they hoped for.
It seems that for the Hawks, it was all about getting some financial flexibility that would allow them to avoid the luxury tax. They can also sign some of their young talented players to extensions more easily when the time comes.
Jazz, on the other hand, gets another exciting player on their young roster. Collins will get to share the frontcourt with All-Star forward Lauri Markkanen and All-Rookie center Walker Kessler and should get more opportunities to be an impactful player than he was in Atlanta.

]]>Reportedly, Bogdanovic got a four-year deal that will pay him $68 million. As part of the agreement, he is declining his $18 million player option for 2023-24.
“Bogi brings so many of the qualities we are looking for in a Hawks player. In addition to his elite shooting ability, he has the versatility to thrive as a starter or sixth man, and competitiveness that is invaluable to our team and culture,” Hawks’ general manager Landry Fields said in a statement. “We are excited that he will remain a key part of our team going forward.”
Bogdanovic was widely expected to hit the free agent market in the summer, where he would have been an intriguing option for many shooting-needy teams. The 30-year-old Serbian is considered a reliable three-point threat, shooting 38.6 percent beyond the arc since entering the league in 2017. By agreeing on an early extension, Atlanta will avoid having to enter a potential bidding war while Bogdanovic gets long-term security.
Bogdan Bogdanovic played only 43 games in 2022-23, missing extended time with back and knee issues. He is averaging 14.1 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.9 assists while making 40.1 percent of his three-pointers this season,

]]>According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Snyder will ink a five-year contract with the franchise.
Snyder returns to the franchise with which he served as an assistant under Mike Budenholzer during the 2013-14 NBA season. He issued a statement after the news became official, saying that he is “thrilled” with the opportunity and excited to work with a talented team and general manager Landry Fields.
“I am thrilled to go back to Atlanta as the next head coach of the Hawks,” Snyder said in a statement. “Landry has a tremendous reputation as an incredibly bright, high character, high-quality individual, and it was quickly evident that we share a passion and commitment to building a winning team with a strong foundation and high standards.”
Snyder will be tasked with turning around the Hawks’ season and try to improve their chances of making the playoffs. Atlanta is currently at No.8 in the East and trails 3.5 games behind the New York Knicks on No.6, which is the last automatic postseason spot.
Still, the Hawks front office are not putting much emphasis on this campaign and have hired Snyder to set up the franchise for long-term success. They believe getting Snyder in the building early will help him evaluate the current state of the roster ahead of the offseason.
Quin Snyder previously spent eight seasons with the Jazz. During that time, Utah made the playoffs six times and went to Conference Semifinals three times. Snyder stepped away after the 2021-22 season with a 372-264 regular season record.

During the second period of the Knicks’ game, Young jumped to contest a Julius Randle drive and appeared to be knocked in the face by Randle’s hand. Young stayed on the floor for several minutes before making his way off the court with a towel over his face.
Young later rejoined his teammates on the bench before rejoining the game in the fourth quarter whilst wearing protective eyewear despite struggling to see out his injured eye. He finished the game with 17 points, six rebounds, and six assists.

]]>According to Thunder’s press release, Harkless and a 2029 second-rounder are arriving in OKC from Atlanta, while sophomore point guard Vit Krejci is heading in the opposite direction.
According to ESPN’s salary cap expert Bobby Marks, Oklahoma City will absorb Harkless’ salary of $4.5 million into the $4.9 million Disabled Player Exception they received as a result of rookie Chet Holmgren’s season-ending injury. The move also allowed the Hawks to get under the luxury tax.
Maurice Harkless actually never put on the Hawks’ jersey, being traded to Atlanta in July as part of the deal that sent Kevin Huerter to the Sacramento Kings. Harkless spent the previous two seasons with the Kings and made 44 starts. He also played with the Orlando Magic and the Portland Trail Blazers, among other teams. His NBA career stats include 6.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game.
Vit Krejci, who was the 37th overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, is coming off his first season in the NBA. He played 30 games in 2021-22, averaging 6.2 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.

]]>Speaking after the Hawks’ 122-111 loss to the Washington Wizards on Thursday night, Young complained about what he perceives are missed foul calls by the officials and called the situation “frustrating”.
“There’s a lot of missed calls,” Young said. “It’s basketball. It’s just, it feels that they’re learning, and they’re just, I don’t know. It’s frustrating.”
During the offseason, the NBA identified a number of “non-basketball moves” that have been used by players to initiate contact and draw fouls and instructed the officials to stop calling them. One of those moves is Young’s trademark technique that sees him driving past the opposing player and then suddenly stopping to cause his defender to bump into him.
Young reiterated that he isn’t opposed to the changes but believes the refs are letting defenders get away with too many things.
“There’s a lot of things that, when guys are driving straight, and guys are getting knocked off balance, it’s still a foul, whether they’re using their lower body or their hands,” he added.
The new rules have already made an impact on Trae Young’s game this season. While he is still averaging healthy 24.2 points per game, he is getting to the free-throw line less frequently. He is currently averaging 4.4 free throws per game, which is almost half of the 8.7 attempts he had in 2020-21.
