Minnesota United’s search for a permanent head coach has finally come to an end. The MLS side announced on Monday that they are hiring Manchester United’s assistant Eric Ramsay to fill out the role.

Ramsay joins Minnesota after spending more than three years with Man Utd, where he served in various roles including player development coach and first-team assistant coach under manager Erik ten Hag.

Minnesota United parted ways with head coach Adrian Heath after the team missed the 2023 MLS Cup Playoffs, ending their four-year postseason streak. Since then, Minnesota had two interim head coaches in Sean McAuley and Cameron Knowles while looking for the best replacement for Heath.

Eric Ramsay started his coaching career with Swansea City and Shrewsbury Town before being hired by Premier League powerhouse Chelsea in 2019 to serve as their U23 coach. Ramsay left Chelsea in 2021 to work under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Manchester United and remained with the club under Solskjaer’s successors Ralf Rangnick and Erik ten Hag. He also had a brief spell with Wales national football team as an assistant.

Ramsay will now become the youngest head coach in MLS history at the age of 32.

“I’m incredibly excited to be joining a club with such a strong football culture, a fanatic fan-base and a brilliant infrastructure,” Ramsay said in a statement released by the team. “I’ve spoken to a lot of the club’s staff throughout the process and you can’t help but feel everyone’s passion for moving the club forward.”

Minnesota United FC announced on Wednesday that their star attacking midfielder Emanuel Reynoso signed a new deal with the team. According to the announcement, Reynoso inked a three-year Designated Player contract that will keep him with the MLS side through the 2025 season.

The agreement between the two sides also has a club option that would allow Minnesota to extend Reynoso’s contract until 2026.

“I feel happy to be in Minnesota with my family,” Reynoso said. “So content, and I decided to re-sign for that reason.”

Minnesota’s head coach Adrian Heath also expressed his delight with the news, saying Reynoso’s stay will give the team a foundation for a successful future.

“He’s an integral part of everything we are trying to do here. We’ve always said we have one of the best players in the league and for him to commit, which for me are his main years of his career, to the club speaks volumes for what we are trying to do,” said Heath.

Emanuel Reynoso arrived in Minnesota in 2020 after spending the early part of his career with Argentina powerhouse Boca Juniors. Reynoso immediately made an impact in his debut season in MLS, dishing seven assists in just 13 matches of the regular season before setting playoff record with another seven assists.

Reynoso was in great form in the following two seasons as well, contributing 15 goals and 20 assists combined. He also made the MLS All-Star selection this year.

It appears that Minnesota United won’t have their star winger Kevin Molino back for the 2021 MLS season.

Molino, who is currently out of a contract, went on social media on Wednesday to say his goodbye to the organization he called home for the past four years.

In the message posted on Instagram, the 30-year-old star wished the club “all the best” and said he is embarking “on to another chapter now.”

Molina had one of his best seasons as a pro in 2020, scoring nine goals and dishing four assists in the regular season. He kept the impressive display going in the playoffs as well, scoring four goals and being the main reason why the Loons made it to the Western Conference Finals.

Minnesota made it their priority to re-sign Kevin Molino this offseason and have reportedly offered him the biggest deal they could. But even that doesn’t look to be enough, and Molino will most likely continue his career outside the MLS.

Molino spent the better part of his professional career in the United States, joining Orlando City in 2011. He was traded to Minnesota ahead of the franchise’s inaugural season in 2017 for a then-record $650,000 in allocation money.

Molino played 67 games for Minnesota, scoring 21 goals in total and contributing 19 assists.

One should never write off the Seattle Sounders, and Monday night’s Western Conference Finals game against Minnesota United showed why. Despite trailing 0-2 until the 75th minute, Seattle managed to orchestrate a stunning comeback and book their fourth MLS Cup appearance in the past five seasons.

Minnesota entered the game as underdogs but decided to show early on that they should be taken seriously. They pressured the Sounders across the field and managed to capitalize soon after, thanks to a memorable free-kick goal by Emanuel Reynoso.

Reynoso shined again in the 67th minute, delivering a well-placed kick that found Bakaye Dibass in Seattle’s penalty box. Dibassy made a leap and got off a header that finished in the net.

At this point, the game looked like it was slipping through the Sounders’ fingers, with nothing going their way. The Loons, on the other hand, seemed to be on the way to their first MLS Cup appearance that would cap off their impressive season.

But Seattle wasn’t about to give up so easily.

Forward Will Bruin gave Sounders a hint of hope late in the game, scoring shortly after he came off the bench. Then in the 88th minute, Raul Ruidiaz tied it up with an impressive goal.

And just when everyone expected the game to finish as a draw, the Sounders somehow managed to find a way to get one more. Gustav Svensson used Nicolas Lodeiro’s corner kick to score in the dying minutes, to tumultuous reactions.

“We have a very, very talented team. I think we have a very, very experienced team, and that’s a good combination,” said Sounders head coach Brian Schmetzer after the game. “I think you can see that everybody stepped up a little bit. Everybody turned on a little more, and I think that just speaks to the volume of our whole squad.”

The Seattle Sounders will face Eastern Conference champs the Columbus Crew in the MLS Cup finals on December 12th. They will be looking for their second consecutive MLS Cup title and third all time.

Montreal Impact made an important addition to their squad as they are trying to keep their playoff hopes in 2020 alive. The team announced on Thursday that they have completed a trade with Minnesota United that landed them striker Mason Toye.

In order to acquire Toye, Impact gave up $600,000 in General Allocation Money (GAM) as well as 2021 MLS SuperDraft second-round pick.

Despite his obvious talent, Minnesota didn’t mind giving up Toye, considering he has fallen down the pecking order following the addition of Kei Kamara. The 21-year-old American was the team’s third option up front at best, so The Loons preferred to cash in on him sooner than later.

Impact, on the other hand, welcomed a signing that is expected to provide a boost for Impact’s already prolific attack, which scored 20 goals in 14 games this season.

“We are happy with the acquisition of Mason, who fits the profile we wanted, meaning a striker who can score and who has already demonstrated what he’s capable of in this league,” said Montreal’s sporting director Olivier Renard. “This addition is also in line with our sporting philosophy of having young players with high potential in the squad.”

Mason Toye made his professional debut with Minnesota in 2018 and has since played 42 games with 17 starts. He’s seven goals and four assists so far.

Toye represents the United States on the international level and was part of the United States U23 squad most recently.

Wednesday proved to be an eventful day in North American soccer, with 10 MLS teams facing off in the latest round of action.

Among those were Western Conference title contenders Minnesota United FC, who played against the 9th placed FC Dallas. Despite going a man down in the 82nd minute due to Romain Metarine’s red card, Minnesota held on for a 3-2 victory. These three points helped them soar above Sporting Kansas City into the Western Conference top spot.

Shifting focus to the Eastern Conference and former leaders Toronto FC defeated rivals Montreal Impact 2-1. This result allowed Toronto to narrow the deficit between them and conference leaders Columbus Crew to just two points.

In what was the shock of the evening, Real Salt Lake defeated close rival LAFC by an unexpected scoreline of 3-0. While LAFC dominated possession and managed to take one shot more than the victors, it was Salt Lake who were able to take advantage of their many opportunities on goal.

Moving back to the east coast and MLS newcomers Inter Miami managed to secure their second victory of the season—a 2-1 win over eight-placed Atlanta United. This sees Inter Miami finally move out from the foot of the table.

Finally, we stop off at DSG Park, where Colorado Rapids were held to a 1-1 draw by the visiting Houston Dynamo. Colorado remain in 10th place in the Western Conference, while Houston are in sixth.

Last night marked the conclusion of the quarterfinal round of the MLS is Back tournament. In what was an action-packed round of fixtures, Minnesota United thumped the San Jose earthquakes with a scoreline of 4-1 while the Portland Timbers defeated New York City FC 3-1.

Despite only controlling 38% of possession on the night, Minnesota proved clinical upfront, getting a 20th minute lead against the San Jose Earthquakes by way of a Robin Lod header. With San Jose clearly disgruntled after conceding, Minessota doubled their lead one minute later, with Jacori Hayes scoring from a rebounded shot.

While San Jose pulled one back from the penalty spot on the 50-minute mark, their revival was short-lived as Luis Amarilla scored Minnesota’s third just six minutes later. The responsibility then fell to Marlon Hairston to put San Jose out of their misery, by scoring a fourth in the 86th minute.

Portland’s game against NYC FC followed a similar tale, with the winning side making the most of their opportunities despite seeing less of the ball. While Jesus Medina put New York City in the lead with a 27th-minute penalty, the momentum swung strongly in Portland’s favor for the remainder of the clash.

Sebastian Blanco leveled in the 43rd minute, while second-half goals from Diego Valeri and Andy Polo put the game out of NYC’s reach. Portland is set to face Philadelphia in their semi-final clash, while Minnesota comes up against Orlando City.

Minnesota United announced on Tuesday that they have signed French left-back Wilfried Moimbe from Ligue 2 side AS Nancy. Although the team did not disclose the specifics of the deal, The Athletic’s Jeff Rueter reports that Moimbe inked a short term deal that will keep him with the organization through 2019 MLS season.

With this move, Minnesota wanted to maintain flexibility after the end of the season while also adding experience and depth to their roster as they are making their way up the Western Conference standings.

“We’ve added another experienced piece [in Wilfried] to what’s going to be a really important last half of the season – he’s vastly experienced, very athletic,” – said Minnesota’s head coach Adrian Heath in a statement. “We’ve been so pleased with Chase Gasper’s emergence but we are mindful of the fact that Chase is the only natural left back that we have on the roster at this moment in time. This will bring added competition.”

“It’s another important piece because we want to keep incrementally adding to the squad and improving the already talented roster that we have. We feel as though this will be important for us moving forward for the rest of the season.” – he added.

Moimbe played most of his professional career in native France, excluding the short stint in 2018 with English Championship side Oldham Athletic. He joined Nancy in September of 2018 and has played 24 games with the club since then, scoring one goal.
