Newcastle United’s 1-0 win over Manchester United on Saturday came at a great price. They lost their starting goalkeeper, Nick Pope, to a dislocated shoulder injury and will be without him for at least five months.

Newcastle already started drawing up options for Pope’s replacement, and one of the names they are reportedly considering is David De Gea. Spanish goalie has been a free agent since the summer after his contract with Man United expired.

De Gea has been waiting for the right opportunity to get back into action, and it appears that Newcastle fits the bill. According to a recent report from ESPN, the 33-year-old player would be open to playing for Newcastle if the club decides to make an approach.

Newcastle has veterans Martin Dubravka and Loris Karius on its roster, but neither is considered to be a viable option for a team that is looking to finish the season in the top four on Premier League standings. Several other names have been linked with Newcastle besides De Gea, including Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale and Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris.

David De Gea spent the last 12 seasons as the No. 1 choice for Manchester United. However, the club opted against renewing his contract after error-prone performances in 2022-23 and instead signed Cameroonian André Onana from Inter Milan in the offseason. De Gea has since attracted offers from Saudia Arabia and MLS but rejected them in hopes he’ll get an opportunity to continue playing in Europe.

Newcastle United are on the market for a new midfielder after Italian Sandro Tonali received a 10-month suspension. According to multiple reports, Newcastle’s primary target is Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips.

Phillips is expected to be available in January as he has been sparsely used by manager Pep Guardiola so far in 2023-24. The England international played only four games in the Premier League and spent less than 90 minutes on the field in total.

Newcastle will likely face tough competition in securing a deal for Phillips. Several other European clubs are reportedly interested in the 27-year-old, including Juventus and Bayern Munich.

If Newcastle doesn’t manage to get Phillips, the club is believed to have several backup options. Their shopping list also includes Al Hilal’s Ruben Neves, who already has Premier League experience from his time with Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Atalanta’s Ederson.

After establishing himself as one of the brightest talents in England with Leeds United, Kalvin Phillips secured a £42 million move to Manchester City in 2022. Unfortunately, injuries have prevented him from getting a good start at Etihad Stadium as he only managed to play 12 Premier League games in his first season with the club due to various injuries.

Phillips is believed to be healthy now but is far from his previous form. The player would be open to moving to a club that would give him more playing time as he hopes to make the England squad for the 2024 EURO.

Newcastle United has handed manager Eddie Howe a new-long term contract, the club confirmed. This comes less than a year after the English manager joined the club. The details of the new deal have not been disclosed.

“It’s a great feeling to commit my future to this incredible club,” Howe exclaimed. “We are still at the start of our journey, but this is an exciting time to be a part of Newcastle United and I’m very excited about the future together.”

Howe was appointed Newcastle United manager in November last year, at a time when the club was yet to win a Premier League game and facing a relegation battle. Since taking charge, Howe turned the Magpies’ season around, guiding them to an 11th place finish 14 points clear of the relegation zone.

Following a Saudi Arabia-backed takeover, Newcastle became the wealthiest club in the Premier League. Howe and his team made use of the team’s new funds to bring in a whole host of new signings during the January transfer window. Still, the club cannot spend excessive funds over the short term due to UEFA’s financial rules, Howe warned.

Backed by the new and rich owners, the Premier League’s Newcastle United is aiming to have a busy transfer window that will allow them to strengthen their squad and escape the relegation battle. Their wish list seems to be growing by the day, with the latest addition being former Manchester United and Watford striker Odion Ighalo.

According to British media outlet Sky Sports, Newcastle is keen to add a player who can help them score goals but who also has experience of playing in the Premier League. Ighalo fits the bill as he scored 40 goals in 100 appearances while with Watford.

Ighalo is currently playing in Saudi Arabia, where he’s been having a productive season with Al Shabab that sees him sitting at the top of the goal-scoring list with nine goals. Despite this, the sources close to the player indicated that the 32-year-old would be open to returning to Premier League if Newcastle makes an official approach.

The only obstacle might be Odion Ighalo’s contract with Al Shabab, which runs through the summer of 2023. Still, Newcastle has money to spend and would likely be able to convince the Saudi Arabia club to budge if they really want their man.

Throughout his career, Ighalo also played for Udinese, Granada, and a couple of clubs in China. He spent portions of 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons with Manchester United, scoring five goals in 23 matches.

Newcastle United’s new rich Saudi Arabia owners are not losing any time making changes at the club. Just two weeks after the change in ownership, the Premier League side has said goodbye to Steve Bruce and will be looking for a new manager.

According to the official statement, Bruce and Newcastle mutually agreed to part ways. However, it doesn’t seem like Bruce had much say in this as he had one foot out the door from the moment Mike Ashley sold the club.

Being manager of the previous regime certainly didn’t do any favors to Bruce, but he also didn’t do much to convince the new owners that he deserved an extended look. Newcastle is currently sitting in the relegation zone at the Premier League table and have only three points from eight matches. They still haven’t won a game in 2021-22.

According to reports made by English media, the favorites to succeed Bruce are Frank Lampard and Paulo Fonseca. Lampard has been out of a job since being fired by Chelsea midway through last season, while Fonseca is also free after Seria A side Roma opted not to extend his contract.

Several other names are believed to be in the mix, including Liverpool legend and current Glasgow Rangers manager Steven Gerrard and former Borussia Dortmund manager Lucien Favre. Newcastle also fancies Belgium national team manager Roberto Martinez, but he is considered a long-shot target.

Sources announced via ESPN on Thursday that a Saudi Arabian-led financial takeover of Newcastle United is expected to be completed within the next 48 hours. The new owner, Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, will complete a buy-out from Mike Ashley for a fee of £300 million.

While an agreement was initially reached in April 2020, an 18-month deadlock saw the deal postponed. At the time, the PIF failed to pass the Premier League’s owners’ and directors’ test. This stumbling block has since been overcome following intensive talks over the past few weeks.

The Premier League released the following statement regarding the deadlock: “The Premier League, Newcastle United Football Club and St James Holdings Limited have today settled the dispute over the takeover of the club by the consortium of PIF, PCP Capital Partners and RB Sports & Media. Following the completion of the Premier League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test, the club has been sold to the consortium with immediate effect.”

Once the agreement takes effect, the PIF will take 80% ownership of the club, with private equity firm Reuben Brothers holding a 10% stake and British businesswoman Amanda Staveley holding the remaining 10% as payment for brokering the deal.

This financial takeover has attracted much speculation from fans and pundits alike, particularly with regards to the potential purchasing of big name players as well as the future of current manager Steve Bruce.

In support of an overwhelming outpour of criticism from fans, Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has called on the Premier League to reevaluate its decision to make certain games solely available for purchase through pay per view platforms.

With soccer fans being barred from attending live matches due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BT Sport and Sky Sports began broadcasting every Premier League game live as part of their existing soccer packages. This changed earlier this month, however, as the Premier League decided that those games that were not initially selected for broadcast would become exclusively available to those fans willing to purchase them through PPV platforms.

Now, fans who want access to games not originally included in standard soccer packages are required to pay a hefty £14.95 fee (approximately $19.54) per live game.

“I am calling on the Premier League to immediately act and review its current pay-per-view arrangements for live matches in the UK,” Ashley stated to the press. He went on to suggest that the Premier League charge fans only £4.95 ($6.47) per match.

The pricing issue is set to be reviewed at a Premier League shareholders meeting scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

Newcastle United continues to make moves this summer, as they announced a big-money transfer for center forward Callum Wilson from AFC Bournemouth on Monday.

Wilson will join Newcastle on a $26 million transfer fee, the fourth-most expensive in the club’s long history.

The England international, who received his first call-up to the national team in 2018, spent the past six seasons of his career at Bournemouth after signing with them from Coventry, his youth club.

The talented forward scored 41 career goals in 126 appearances in the Premier League with the Cherries, playing a key part in their stint in England’s top flight from 2015 to 2020.

Wilson scored a personal high of 14 goals in the 2018-19 season before slightly regressing last year, scoring only 7 as Bournemouth was relegated.

The Coventry native expressed excitement about joining Newcastle, saying, “It feels amazing. Such a massive club. It wasn’t an easy decision as Villa is back home for me but this club is huge and I want to get off to a flying start.”

Aston Villa had previously attempted to sign Wilson during this summer’s transfer window.

Wilson is expected to join Newcastle United’s training sessions this week as they prepare for their Saturday Premier League opener against West Ham United.

Newcastle United, under new ownership and with deep pockets which are looking to spend in order to acquire premier talents, is set to make a push to sign star Lazio striker Ciro Immobile this summer.

Immobile has been one of Italy’s top scorers over the past four seasons during his tenure in the Italian capital. He has scored 116 goals in 167 goals since joining the team in 2016, establishing himself as a scoring force on one of the country’s top teams.

2019-20 has been Immobile’s strongest season yet. He is currently leading Serie A in goals with 27 in only 26 games played, recording 7 assists as well. At 30 years old, Immobile’s fantastic offensive output has led to lots of top European teams being interested in his services.

Newcastle hasn’t had European success in some time but is looking to push towards competing for the Premier League and European berths under a new ownership group led by Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

Adding Immobile would give the team a much-needed productive option at the striker position. The Magpies have scored only 25 goals this season, tied with last-place Norwich City for the worst mark in the Premier League.

In one of this summer’s most unexpected soccer transfers (at least up until now) Premier League side Newcastle United paid $50 million for the right to acquire Brazilian striker Joelinton from TSG Hoffenheim.

The fee paid to acquire the 22-year-old in the club’s long history broke the record previously set by the $28 million the club paid to sign forward Michael Owen in 2005.

Joelinton is considered one of the top young forwards in European soccer. He burst onto the scene in 2018-19 as a goal-scoring threat, tallying 11 scores in only 34 games with the Bundesliga side.

Sport Recife is where the 22-year-old began his professional career, but he then moved to Germany from his native Brazil in 2015.

The majority of his first two seasons were spent on loan, however, playing for Austrian club Rapid Wien, where he scored 15 goals in 60 matches.

Now, the young forward, who is considered to have the potential to play for Brazil’s powerful national team at some point in the future, will have the chance to prove his mettle in the ultra-competitive Premier League.

The Magpies will look to him to provide a scoring threat as they fight to advance past the league’s mid-table positions.
