]]>Hicks will reportedly ink a four-year, $44 million contract while being guaranteed a place in the starting rotation after spending the majority of his career in MLB in the bullpen. The deal also comes with $2 million in incentives that the 27-year-old player can earn if he reaches 100 innings.
Hicks split the 2023 campaign between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Toronto Blue Jays. He played a total of 65 games, finishing the season with a 3-9 record, 3.29 ERA, 81 strikeouts, and 12 saves.
The Giants are now hoping that Hicks can perform on the same level as a starting pitcher in the majors. He received his MLB debut in 2018 but has only started eight games, all of which came in the 2022 season.
Currently, San Francisco only has the 2023 NL Cy Young Award finalist Logan Webb and veteran ace Robbie Ray, who is expected to return after the All-Star break following Tommy John surgery, as undisputed starters. Taking a risk on Hicks makes sense for the franchise, as they get a new starter on a reasonable contract at best and a valuable relief pitcher at worst.

Melvin coached the Padres for two seasons, reaching the 2022 NL Championship Series before slipping this past season. Last season’s performance was disappointing given the Padres’ $258 million payroll; the third-highest in the league.

]]>Facing two outs in the ninth inning, Reds’ Spencer Steer connected on Cobb’s 125th pitch of the game to give his team the only run in a 6-1 loss.
Cobb was looking to pitch the fifth no-hitter in MLB this season and the first in his career. It would also be the first no-hitter for the Giants since 2015.
“Still right now, this is surreal,” Cobb said after the game. “In the moment, I was just focused on the delivery and the game plan and executing pitches, and then it started to become real. Had some cool thoughts going on in my mind of having my family here and thanking them. It was special, for sure.”
Cobb ended the Reds game with 131 pitches, with 83 of them being for strikes. It was the highest pitch count of his career and the most by any pitcher in MLB in 2023.
The 35-year-old made 25 starts this season, going 7-5 with a 3.57 ERA and 125 strikeouts. He received his first All-Star nod this season.

]]>According to the Giants, Crawford landed on IL after dealing with knee inflammation. The move has been made retroactive to July 17. The team also recalled infielder David Villar from Triple-A Sacramento while sending outfielder Bryce Johnson the other way.
Crawford played 64 games this season but was bothered by his knee for the better part of the campaign. This led to his struggling at the plate, hitting .207 with five homers and 36 RBIs. The 36-year-old player had a particularly rough stretch in the past four games, managing just one hit in 15 at-bats appearances.
“He’s been dealing with the soreness to some degree since spring training,” Giants’ manager Gabe Kapler told the reporters on Wednesday. “Some days, it’s manageable. Some days, it’s challenging. We thought it was a good time to give him a blow. We hope to get him back after the off day.”
Crawford spent his entire MLB career with the Giants and is currently in the final year of the two-year, $32 million extension he signed back in 2021. He has three All-Star selections on his resume and was part of the two World Series-winning teams in San Francisco.

]]>Webb’s new deal is worth $90 million and buys out two arbitration-eligible years and the first three free-agency years. The 26-year-old player is earning a base salary of $4.6 million in 2023.
“It was just important for me to be able to say I can wear a Giants uniform for a long time,” Webb said. “It’s important for not only myself, but my family. I know they’re very excited. There are a lot of diehard Giants fans in Rocklin, so I’m where I want to be. It’s an honor.”
Logan Webb made his majors debut for the Giants in 2019 and has since established himself as one of the most exciting young pitchers in the league. He had a breakthrough season in 2022, finishing the campaign with a 15–9 record while having a 2.90 ERA and 163 strikeouts. Webb finished 11th in NL Cy Young Award voting last year and ranked 9th in wins above replacement among NL pitchers.
However, Webb isn’t off to a good start in 2023. He is 0-3 in his first three games of the season and has a 4.76 ERA and 22 strikeouts.

]]>Romo’s final inning wasn’t spectacular, as he committed two clock violations and surrendered two singles. But this didn’t matter in the end as he eventually got the proper sendoff from the game he enjoyed for 15 years.
“Very fitting to find some closure in what literally is for me, was a storybook career,” Romo told reporters after the game.
Sergio Romo spent the first nine years of his MLB career with the Giants, earning an All-Star nod in 2013 and helping the franchise to three World Series wins. He later became a journeyman, suiting up for the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Miami Marlins, and the Minnesota Twins, among other franchises. The 40-year-old player split the 2022 campaign between the Seattle Mariners and the Toronto Blue Jays, making a total of 23 appearances.
Romo had already made up his mind about retirement when the Giants called to ask whether he would like to pitch for them during spring training. He said yes, and ended up signing a short-term contract that allowed him to retire as a member of the franchise.

Should the option be exercised, Jackson will make a $15,000 donation to the Giants Community Fund in 2023, followed by further donations of $32,500 in 2024 and $35,000 in 2025.
Jackson missed the entirety of the 2022 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on April 13. In 2021, the 31-year-old proved to be an essential member of the Atlanta Braves lineup, helping the team to win the World Series. He went 2-2 with a career-low 1.98 ERA in 71 games in 2021.
Over the course of his seven-year career, Jackson is 16-6 with a 4.24 ERA with 19 saves in 253 relief appearances. Prior to arriving in Atlanta, Jackson spent two seasons with the Texas Rangers.
San Francisco has also acquired left-hander Erik Miller, trading right-hander Yunior Marte to the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange.

]]>The deal struck between the Giants and Conforto’s agent Scott Boras will see the outfielder return to the field after spending the entirety of the 2022 season sidelined due to undergoing shoulder surgery in April. This comes after the 29-year-old player declined an $18.4 million qualifying offer from the New York Mets, thereby becoming a free agent.
Conforto played the first seven years of his MLB career with the Mets, where he established himself as a .255 hitter with 132 home runs, 396 RBIs, and a .824 OPS. In 2017, his standout performance earned him a spot on the All-Star team.
For Boras, this winter has proven to be a lucrative trade period, with another one of his clients, Carlos Correa, signing a 12-year, $315 million contract with the New York Mets.

]]>Correa originally agreed to a 13-year, $350 million contract with the Giants last week, and his arrival to San Francisco seemed like a done deal. But according to reports, the 28-year-old player’s medical ended up producing some red flags that made the franchise uneasy about committing such money to the veteran.
While the Giants considered their next move, the Mets swooped in to convince Correa to come to New York. It turned out he didn’t need much convincing as he didn’t hesitate much to put a signature to a 12-year, $315 million contract.
After the news broke out, the Giants released a short statement about their failed attempt to sign Correa. According to the team’s president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi, the team and Correa’s representatives had a “difference of opinion” over the results of the player’s physical examination.
Correa struggled with injuries in the past, having issues with his back, ribs, and thumb at different points in his pro career. However, he was mostly-injury free during the 2022 season, playing 136 games with the Minnesota Twins. He finished the campaign with a .291 batting average, 22 home runs, and 64 RBIs.
