Two-time Australian Open and US Open champion Naomi Osaka has been spending time on the practice court as she prepares for her return to tennis at the Brisbane International, with the qualifiers commencing on December 29. The Japanese-American tennis player withdrew from last year’s Australian Open after revealing that she was pregnant.

Osaka gave birth to her daughter Shai in Los Angeles in July. “She’s really pumped, excited to be back in Brisbane,” tournament director Cameron Pearson said on Wednesday before revealing: “She arrived Christmas morning and was out practicing a few hours later. No Christmas pudding for her, she was straight into it.”

Along with Osaka, former ATP men’s number one Rafael Nadal is also expected to mark his return to tennis at the Brisbane International this week. The 22-time Grand Slam champion has not played since last January after he suffered a hip flexor injury at the Australian Open.

The organizers of the Italian Open have confirmed that the tournament will begin to award equal prize money to both men and women starting in 2025.

This move comes after Iga Swiatek won the women’s competition last year, and with it, 332,260 euros ($364,000) in prize money. This is less than half of the 836,355 euros ($916,000) that Novak Djokovic was paid for winning the men’s tournament.

“For the first time in history, we have started the process that over three years will lead to equal prize money between the women’s and the men’s tournaments,” Italian tennis federation president Angelo Binaghi stated during the presentation for this year’s event on Tuesday. “We’re talking about 8 million euros (nearly $9 million) for each event.”

Billie Jean King often explained that her reason for moving to form the women’s pro circuit was due to the pay discrepancy. King won $600 for her 1970 Italian Open title, while Ilie Nastase was awarded $3,500 for winning the men’s event that same year.

With concerns over COVID still impacting the world of sports for the foreseeable future, the organizers of the Australian Open have finalized a plan for running the 2021 edition of the grand slam with effective health and safety guidelines in place.

While Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley explained that he will be observing the way that the US Open and Roland Garros is run this year, he confirmed that the Australian Open tournament organizers have already determined a list of practices that are sure to be implemented by the time that the tournament commences.

Some basic practices that will be applied include reduced seating due to social distancing, the likelihood of no overseas spectators, and a secure bio-security “bubble” that players will remain within for the duration of the tournament.

Overseas players are expected to spend time in quarantine after their arrival in Australia, be tested for COVID-19, and stay at one of the official bio-secure tournament hotels.

When questioned about these practises, Tiley responded by saying “There is no question with the current lockdown in Melbourne as not ideal for people today, but positive for the future. If we get on top of the infection rate, we will all have learned some good lessons.”

Patrick Mouratoglou, the coach of multiple grand slam winner Serena Williams, has expressed his intention to make Ultimate Tennis Showdown a regular fixture on the tennis calendar. The tournament, established by Mouratoglou himself, was played over five weekends at the Mouratoglou Tennis Academy during the ATP shut down, with several top tennis stars competing.

The tournament’s format differs significantly from that of traditional tournaments featured on the ATP tour, with features such as a new scoring format, power-up cards, and mid-match interviews. The reason for this is to attract new audience members to the sport.

“I think it is much more interesting to have two different products in tennis,” Mouratoglou explained in an interview. “Some of the core tennis fans will watch UTS, but we are attracting a new audience.”

Mouratoglou went on to justify his point with research findings. “If you look through the figures of the fans we have reached over the last few weeks, the average age of our fans is 30 and 50 per cent of our fans are not always watching tennis regularly. That is our goal.

We don’t know what the calendar is going to look like in 2021 with the Covid-19 crisis and all the consequences of it, so there are a lot of weeks that are available and a lot of weeks to do things and that is great.”

The Rogers Cup in Canada is advancing towards this weekend’s final, with players securing their places further into the competition. The champion of 23 Grand Slams, Serena Williams, showed great skill on the tennis court securing her place in the third round of the Cup with little difficulty.

The 37-year-old Williams managed to beat the Belgian Elise Martens with a straight-set victory ending the match with a final score of 6-3, 6-3, once again proving she is one of the best female tennis players in the world. The Belgian had a better start in the match and break up, but Williams managed to regain initiative quickly and dominated the first set.

Williams said that she loved going out there and that feeling like her movement was great. She added that she had been working on her fitness and she felt like she was really able to shine through.

In the next phase, Williams will be facing the 24-year-old Ekaterina Yevgenyevna. This year’s Rogers Cup will come as practice for Williams as the US Open is just a few weeks away, starting on the 26th of August. This will be another attempt for Williams to equal the record 24th Grand Slam title.

To everyone’s surprise, on July 13, the Romanian Simona Halep managed to beat former world number one Serena Williams at the Centre Court, winning her first Wimbledon title.

The talented 27-year-old player defeated Williams in a match that lasted 56 minutes and ended with a score of 6-2. Halep showed great skill on the court and remained really calm throughout her stunning performance. Williams, on the other hand, seemed pretty uncoordinated and made many mistakes. The Romanian quickly took initiative and set her dominance on the field really early in the game, coming to a lead of 3-0 in just eight minutes. From there, she continued setting a pace so intense that Williams could not follow it. This is Halep’s second victory against Serena in 11 matches. She stopped Williams in her intention to reach a 24th Grand Slam title, equaling the record set previously by Margaret Court. Halep’s victory was widely celebrated in her country since she is the first Romanian to win at Wimbledon.

Victory at Wimbledon comes with €2.5 million worth of prize money, as well as 2,000 WTA points.

Everyone likes a good underdog story, one in which the weaker and unexpected side wins, and that’s normal because such stories inspire us to achieve great things. This year, Wimbledon gave us one.

No one on the course expected the outcome of the Gauff–Williams match and judging by the reaction, neither did the winner of the match.

The American Cori Gauff who is only 15 years old managed to shock everyone by beating Venus Williams in the first round. The five-time Wimbledon champion Williams was defeated with a score of 6-4, 6-4. Considering her age, Gauff was the youngest player that qualified for the main draw.

It is interesting to note that Venus had won 7 Grand Slams before the young match-winner was even born which gives us a good perspective of how great her victory is.

When she won the match she had a really emotional reaction and she said that she never thought that this would happen and that she was literally living her dream right now. She had also previously said that she was inspired by Serena and Venus Williams.

Venus showed great sportsmanship and congratulated her young opponent, telling her to keep going and wishing her good luck.

This year, the French Open brought the audience a really different, and might we say strange experience, surprising the fans with unexpected outcomes were the underdogs get to shine and creating stories that have the power to become legendary.

One of those stories will definitely be about Australian Ashleigh Barty’s miraculous comeback to the sport. The 23-year-old surprised everyone in 2014 when she decided to take a break from tennis to play professional cricket. She eventually returned to tennis after 17 months in early 2016 and has since won four tour titles, including the Miami Open in March, as well as the US Open women’s doubles title last year. And now she’s the first Australian to win the singles title in Roland Garros since Margaret Court’s victory in 1973.

This is also the first time that the Australian won a Grand Slam singles title, which makes her comeback even more miraculous. After the match she said that the French Open was a special place for Australian players and that she is incredibly proud of what she has been able to achieve, adding that she almost played the perfect match.

Last weekend was definitely an amazing time at Wimbledon, providing tennis fans worldwide with great entertainment and many unexpected, exciting outcomes.
