]]>Benzema suffered a thigh injury in training just three days before the commencement of France’s World Cup campaign, thus resulting in his withdrawal from the squad.
“I won’t get into the decision that France took”, Ancelotti stated.
“They evaluated Karim’s situation in the moment. For them, he wasn’t going to be able to play again at the World Cup and they let him go. For us, the player has come back with a lot of excitement and a lot of motivation. He knows that he didn’t do what he wanted to in the first part of the season. In the second part, I’m convinced he’ll do well and help us a lot.”
Benzema’s agent criticized the player’s exclusion from the squad as being a “premature” move by France manager Didier Deschamps.
Prior to the World Cup, Benzema had dealt with a series of hamstring problems, meaning that the player was only able to play in seven of Real Madrid’s 14 games leading up to the World Cup break.

]]>“All that we are is thanks to you,” his daughter, Kely Nascimento, wrote on social media. “We love you endlessly. Rest in peace.”
Pelé passed away from multiple organ failures as a result of the progression of colon cancer that he had been suffering from over the past few years. His funeral will be on Monday and Tuesday when his casket is set to be carried through the streets of Santos, the city where his career started.
The funeral procession will take place at Santos’ Vila Belmiro Stadium outside Sao Paulo, where he has been widely stated to have played some of his best games.
Outgoing Brazil president Jair Bolsonaro has declared three days of mourning for the footballing icon, calling Pelé “a great citizen and patriot, raising the name of Brazil wherever he went.”
For over two decades, Pelé was the most prolific scorer of the Brazilian club Santos. With 77 international goals, Pelé remains the all-time leading scorer for the Brazilian national team.

]]>“My story with the Cameroonian national team has come to an end,” Onana posted. “Players come and go, names are fleeting, but Cameroon comes before any person or player,” Onana wrote, without citing reasons for his decision. “Cameroon remains eternal and so does my love for the national team.”
The Inter Milan player found himself at the center of controversy during his national team’s World Cup campaign in Qatar. After butting heads with Cameroon head coach Rigobert Song, Onana took to social media to release a statement referring to his disagreement with Song over tactical decisions.
Onana’s outcry resulted in the player’s suspension from the team. Having appeared in the 1-0 loss to Switzerland in the team’s opening game, he was unable to play in the 3-3 draw with Serbia as a result of his ban.
While Cameroon was able to turn their form around in a surprise 1-0 victory over Brazil in their final group game, this feat was not enough to secure qualification to the knockout rounds.

At one point, security forces would not allow Argentina’s squad to move forward to greet fans at the Obelisco monument in Buenos Aires for fear of safety concerns. Argentine Football Association president Chiqui Tapia posted on Twitter to apologize for the issue and thank fans for their support.

]]>“For Richy, tomorrow he’s going to have an MRI [scan] to know very well the importance of the injury,” Conte confirmed. “After tomorrow we will see very well the time he needs to recover.”
As Brazil’s central striker, Richarlison scored three goals during his country’s run to the quarterfinals. He was injured with six minutes left to play in regular time in Brazil’s quarterfinal loss to Croatia on penalties.
In addition to Richarlison, Spurs are also monitoring the injury situation of Uruguay midfielder Rodrigo Betancur and Wales’ Ben Davies, both of whom have returned to training. While Davies has already returned to full training and is expected to be match-fit, Conte expects Bentancur to return in Spurs’ January 1 match against Aston Villa at the earliest.
Following the World Cup break, Tottenham’s first game is a friendly match against French Ligue 1 side Nice on Wednesday. They then face Brentford in the Premier League on Monday.

]]>Modric led his team to a 2-1 victory over Morocco in the 2022 World Cup third-place playoff, thereby walking away from the competition with a bronze medal. This means that Modric and Croatia have won medals at two consecutive World Cups, having lost the final of the 2018 competition to France.
“This medal is very important for us, for me, for Croatia as a national team, as a country,” Modric said following Saturday’s victory. We confirm with this medal that Croatia is playing an important role in the world of football and we are leaving Qatar as winners.”
Head coach Zlatko Dalic is of the opinion that Modric will continue to play for his country at Euro 2024 should the team qualify for the tournament. Still, the Real Madrid legend prefers to focus on the Nations League competition first.
Scheduled for June 2023, the UEFA Nations League finals will see Croatia come up against Italy, Spain, and the Netherlands in a knockout format. The semifinal draw is scheduled to take place on January 25.

]]>The final, which marked Messi’s 26th World Cup game, saw Argentina defeat France 4-2 on penalties after the game ended 3-3 after extra time.
Messi scored two goals during the final, thereby bringing his final tally to seven goals for the tournament. This is just one less than Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat trick in the final to take his tally to eight and thereby win the Golden Boot award.
In addition to breaking the record of 25 appearances previously held by Germany’s Lothar Matthaus, Messi also becomes the first Argentinian to appear in five World Cups. The player has appeared in every one of Argentina’s games at the competition since the 2010 edition.
With his goal against Croatia in the semifinal, Messi became Argentina’s all-time leading goalscorer at the World Cup with 11 goals. He is now sitting on 13 goals thanks to his brace in the final.
This is Argentina’s third World Cup victory and the nation’s first triumph since 1986.
