The Houston Texans are extending young linebacker Zach Cunningham.

According to reports, Cunningham is getting a four-year contract extension that is going to pay him $58 million, an average of $14.5 million per season.

Cunningham played great last season, racking up 142 tackles and paving the way for this big contract extension. He was slated to play on the final year of his rook contract and was going to make $1.1 million this year.

While it’s not a record-setting contract, it’s obvious that the Texans feel strongly about Cunningham’s presence on the defense and believe that he is a reliable and steady piece of the puzzle on that side of the ball.

The Texans have mostly been losing talent recently. They lost star wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, who is a top-three wideout in the league, to the Arizona Cardinals earlier in the offseason. The Texans also recently released cornerback Aaron Colvin, just one year into a four-year deal.

While Cunningham is far from a generational talent, hes a solid player on the defensive line and an excellent run defender that should be able to help the Texans defense become a better unit in the coming years.
